Newport Launch Cup Defence With Seven Tries
BONYMAEN 3, NEWPORT 41
Principality Cup holders Newport breezed into the quarter-finals with a
seven try slaughter of First Division Bonymaen.
Forced to play into the biting wind at the Morfa Stadium in the first half,
Newport struggled to get their game together and battling Bony held out for
the first half an hour.
Full back Jason Davies had a close range penalty after two minutes, but
pushed his kick wide, and then three drop goal attempts missed the mark.
Slowly but surely Newport found their feet and it looked as though the fit-
again Shane Howarth had schemed an opening score for Ben Breeze midway
through the first half.
But referee Ceri Evans called them back for crossing in the centre and it
took another 10 minutes before Newport got on the scoreboard.
It came shortly after Bonymaen had lost their outside half Gareth Jones on
a stretcher and via top try scoring wing Matt Mostyn.
Once again, Howarth was involved as he brought the Irish international crashing inside.
Howarth converted and then used the long, cut out pass to conjure up two more tries before the break from centre Nathan Brew and full back Emyr Lewis.
Newport bagged four more tries in the second half, former New Zealand scrum
half Ofisa Tonu’u leading the rout with a try from the base of a ruck 10
metres out after an hour.
Mostyn was worked clear on a five to one overlap for his second before
forwards Paul Young and Jason Forster rounded off proceedings.
