Uwic Women Win At Twickers
UWIC 23, LOUGHBOROUGH UNI 7
The UWIC women’s team made history as they won the BUSA Halifax Championship final at Twickenham, comfortably outplaying the reigning champions.
It was a great day for the Welsh students as they gained revenge for not reaching the final last year when they drew 19-19 with the English team in the semi-finals.
UWIC also provided some quickfire revenge for the game in Wales after last weekend’s Lloyds TSB Six Nations beating at HQ as they ran in three tries.
Pacy wing Hayley Baxter grabbed two of the UWIC tries, her first kicking-off the scoring after 33 minutes.
But despite grabbing the first points, the underdogs found themselves behind at the interval when Loughborough scored a try of their own through full back Charlotte Barras.
Barras added the conversion and the team that have dominated the tournament for the past four years were back in the driving seat.
But it took only four minutes of the second half before UWIC got back infront when scrum half Kerry Jenkins
crossed for a try which she also converted.
UWIC arrived at the final the hard way, having beaten Oxford and Cambridge along the way, and they ended their finest hour with an injury time try from Baxter to complete a great result for Welsh rugby.
Scorers: UWIC: Tries; Hayley Baxter 2, Kerry Jenkins; Con: Kerry Jenkins; Pens: Kerry Jenkins 2. Loughborough: Try: Charlotte Barras; Con: Charlotte Barras.
