His nine points on Tuesday saw him pass Neil Jenkins total to reach an incredible 2,283 points in 251 appearances.
Williams, like Jenkins a former Wales Youth international outside half, began his league rugby in 1991-92 and has played for four clubs in the Premier Division and Division One.
Williams was born and still lives in Nantyglo. At school he was a keen soccer player until a friend encouraged him to try the oval-ball game at 15. After his first park game there was no turning back, and Williams soon found himself in the squad at Abertillery, where he won his Wales Youth cap.
“My boyhood hero was an outside half, but it was not a Wales international,” Williams said.
“It was Martin Powell of Blaina, a wonderful goal-kicker.
“My schoolteacher Mr. Liddington sent me along to Powell, who showed me how to kick goals,” said Williams.
From Abertillery he yearned for top rugby and moved to Newport where Keith Westwood was one of the coaches.
“It started well, but Keith left and with a change of coach and the coming of Canadian Gareth Rees, I was not getting much rugby.”
It was at Pontypool that Williams developed his all round game, and under the tutelage of Mark Ring he developed his now famous trade mark move.
“I moved to Pontypool and played full back and centre. Mark Ring was there and it was he who taught me how to knee the ball to advantage.
“I had watched TV and saw Mark do it, Mike Hall catch it and Nigel Walker score. Now I do it once a match and the centres are quick the follow it up and score.
“Mark taught me a lot of tricks, but I didn’t return to Premier rugby as I had a good job by then, working as a quality control inspector. I joined Newbridge and am in my seventh season with them.”
But breaking records does not come easily, and the final points proved hard to come by.
“I was told that I could pass Neil’s points total before the game on Saturday, but missed both conversions. I hit a post on each occasion.”
But the record was sure to fall, and on a clear evening last Tuesday, Williams remembered his shooting boots and made sure of his place in Welsh rugby history.
“Now I have my sights set to be the first man to reach 3,000 points.”
