Morriston U16s Draw With Cwmbran U16s
Morriston U16s 19 – Cwmbran U16s 19Sunday 6th October 2002Cwmbran rfc u16’s girls travelled to top rivals Morriston in what turned out to be an excellent display of rugby from two of the top clubs in the principality’s welsh development of female rugby.Cwmbran started with the sun in their faces and immediately warmed to the occasion with an excellent inter passing passage of play from the kick off that caught Morriston cold and resulting in new recruit Hannah Szigetvari scoring the opening try, converted by vice Capt. Sara Welland playing as flanker for the day. Morriston soon responded with an unconverted try, another Cwmbran new recruit Carly Heeferman showed superb skills down the touch line only to be bundled into touch twice just short of the touchline.Shortly before half time a lapse in concentration from Cwmbran resulted in Morriston picking up a lose ball to score another converted try leaving them leading 12-7.The second half resumed and Morriston were first to score again now leading by 19-7. Someone had to rally the Cwmbran side and captain Sam Jones along with strong forwards Tanya Davies, Steph Turnbull, Megan York, Branwen Scrivens, Aimee Denning and Holly Kersey obliged with the forwards winning plenty of ball and pacey backs like Zoe Havelot, Stacey Gough, Haley Baldwin and Kelly Bevister showing excellent handling and passing skills.It wasn’t long before Hannah Szigetvari scored her 2nd try unconverted.With time running out Cwmbran were not going to let this one go. Carly Tutton, also a new recruit had a superb game at scrum half earning her player of the match after a superb break offloading to Branwen Scrivens who powered her way through the defence to go under the posts. Sara Welland converted resulting in a well-deserved draw 19-19. What ever the rest of the season has to offer nothing will top this game until the rematch, both clubs showed that there is a place for female rugby and showed how it can be played at the highest level with skill and commitment to match any team male or female.
