Morris takes over the All Whites captaincy from former Wales and Lions centre Scott Gibbs. Mark Taylor has also been appointed as vice-captain.

Swansea coach John Connolly believes Morris is the best man for the job and after deputising for Scott Gibbs during November, the prop will lead his side out on Saturday at St. Helens.

Connolly said: “Scott (Gibbs) has been captain for a few years now and has done a good job.

“But we want Scott to play for another few seasons and sometimes players need to go that extra mile if they are going to last that long and being captain at this stage may not be the best thing for him.

“Darren did a good job and is well-liked by his fellow player. He spoke well after the games to the players and we feel he is the right man to take over from Scott at this time.”

Bridgend centre Dafydd James could miss the start of Wales’ Six Nations campaign after having an appendix removed.

James underwent emergency surgery and is unlikely to be fit until late January meaning a race against time to make Wales first game against Italy.

Bridgend Chief Executive Adrian Hadley said: “Dafydd will be out for a month or so.

“He’ll miss all of December and most of January so I guess that will affect his Wales hopes.”
