Ebbw Vale surprised Pontypridd at Sardis road as they ground out a 10-6 victory in the January cold in the Welsh Premiership.

With Wales veteran Neil Jenkins out with a broken hand, Pontypridd fullback Brett Davey took over the kicking duties – with mixed results.

He missed two early attempts that he normally would have slotted with ease, but kicked a 40-metre goal on the stroke at halftime to cancel out Ebbw Vale scrum-half Bryan Shelbourne’s effort and allow the home side to go into the break level at 3-3.

Pontypridd coach Lynn Howells sent Wales international backrowers Richard Parks and Michael Owen on to kick-start the side’s limp display, but Davey’s second penalty goal was cancelled out by a controversial 73rd-minute try to visiting fly-half Scott Mitchell, who looked guilty of a double movement.

Shelbourne converted it, and the Steelmen tackled for dear life to hold Pontypridd out for the final 10 minutes.
