“We always knew we would go out and play with a lot of passion and pride and I think we showed in the first half that England aren’t unbeatable,” said Humphreys.

“When Steve Williams was sent to the sin-bin it hit us for six.

“We were far better than we were the week before. we said before the game that we wanted to play with guts, character and self belief.

“We knew that if we did that we had a chance and we never thought the game was out of our reach. We started well and if we had held onto that pass just before half-time it might have been different.

“International matches can turn on little things like that and then England hit us with those two tries at the start of the second half. We are getting better and that wasn’t too bad.”

Sidoli speaks

Will Greenwood, who matched Rory Underwood and Gerald Davies with his sixth try in matches between the two countries, was full of praise for the Welsh effort.

“They had taken a lot of flak during the week but that was one hell of a physical battle. It required all our cool headedness and control to win,” said Greenwood.

“This is one hell of a place to come and win and we are delighted with our victory. Whatever the bookmakers or pundits said about it, that was a proud Welsh team out there.”
