Howe Included In Ireland Squad

Ulster winger Tyrone Howe is a surprise inclusion in a 35-man Ireland panel for a two-day squad session later this week.

Injury has ruled Howe out of the Irish picture since he was called up as a late replacement for last summer’s tour of New Zealand.

Howe was selected as a replacement for the 2001 Lions tour of Australia but since then, a dip in form and injury has seen him lose his place in the Irish squad.

The Ulster winger will attend the two-day get-together on Wednesday and Thursday.

There is no chance of Howe forcing his way back into the Irish squad for the remaining RBS Six Nations games against Wales and England.

However, Howe will view his call-up as a chance to launch a late challenge for a place in Ireland’s World Cup squad.

The Ulster winger sustained a bad hamstring tear in a Heineken Cup game against Cardiff in October.

Fit-again Justin Bishop has also been called up for the Irish squad session.

Bishop played in Ireland’s wins over Fiji and Argentina in the autumn but was ruled out of the opening three Six Nations matches by injury.

Once again, Keith Wood will miss the Irish squad session because of his shoulder injury and he seems certain to miss the game against Wales on 22 March.
