CAERPHILLY 19 NEWPORT 65
Newport continue to impress in the Welsh Premiership with a big win over Caerphilly at Virginia Park.
The Black and Ambers scored eight tries as they recorded their biggest victory so far this season to produce their sixth win in nine games.
Early sparring was forgotten as Newport turned up the second-half heat to win 65-19 to close the gap on Neath at the top of the table.
The home side held out for the first quarter, but once Newport winger Alex Cadwallader timed his run perfectly on the blindside to shatter the home defence for the game’s opening try, a Newport victory always looked the most likely outcome.
Newport flanker Jason Forster added a second just after the half-hour mark with a powerful run from 30 metres. And as the half drew to close, and wing Matt Mostyn crossed for the games third try.Jason Strange converted all three tries and slotted over two penalties to give the visitors a 27-12 lead at the interval.
The second half saw Newport extend their advantage, flanker Matthew Veater crossing just two minutes after the restart.
When Caerphilly were judged to have deliberately brought down a rolling maul inches form the tryline, the referee awarded the fist penalty try of the evening on the hour mark.
Caerphilly hit back with a try five minutes later, when a stray Shane Howarth pass was intercepted by Owain Ashman, his pass to Jarrod Murphy ensured the score.
But Newport had too much power for the home side, and as the clock ticked down they asserted their authority with tries from Mostyn and Forster, and Percy Montgomery kept the scoreboard rolling with the boot.
A second penalty awarded try for a high tackle, converted by Montgomery compounded Caerphilly’s misery, and consigned the Castletown men to their second heavy defeat in a week.
