Wales women beat Ireland 17-0 at The Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night, retaining their 100% record against the Irish. Wales applied the pressure in the first half with Catrin Edwards having an outstanding game in the front row and the Welsh forwards dominating play up front. However it was the Irish who nearly scored first in the 15th minute with a super break from fly half Joanne O’Sullivan who put Sarah Jane Belton into space but Wales regrouped quickly enough to recover.

Wales punished the Irish when they failed to secure possession in their own half and good scrummaging by Wales put fly half Naomi Thomas through to score. Non Evans added another try ten minutes later which she converted giving Wales a 12-0 lead at the break.

Hooker Jamie Kift scored the only try in the second half, as Wales failed to capitalise on their possession. Ireland were unlucky not to score at the end but some superb defence from the Welsh girls held them up over the line. Wales now face France in Paris next weekend.

Backs coach Alun Harries commented after the game, “We always said that the game would be about our own performance, and we under performed. I’m happy that we got a result, but there are certain aspects of the game that I am disappointed with and we will be working on before we meet France next weekend.”
