Llanelli, Cardiff, Bridgend and Newport do battle in a double header at the Millennium Stadium and two clubs will leave the Welsh Cup for the last time in their current form.
Next season’s club knockout tournament should take on an entirely different appearance as a repercussion of introducing five regional teams to Welsh Rugby.
‘It’s probable that our five regional entities will not figure in Principality Cup action next season so this could be the last chance for fans to watch the sides as they know them now,’ said WRU group commercial manager Gwyn Thomas.
‘Obviously the structure for next season is still to be confirmed, but it’s likely that the monopoly the top clubs have had on the tournament since its inception in 1972 will be coming to an end this year.’
The Scarlets, who are proud owners of the ‘Cup Kings’ tag with 11 Cup Finals to their name, face the Blue and Blacks who have taken the trophy home seven times themselves. The Ravens and the Black and Ambers, who meet in the first match of the day at 3.00pm, have both won the trophy twice.
‘The tournament has always been a true club competition and it should be even more of a leveller with Premiership clubs putting up the second tier teams that are destined to feed the regional entities.’
And if watching your club make a last stand in the Principality Cup doesn’t appeal the Welsh Rugby Union have introduced a number of new initiatives to help the day go with a bang.
Thousands of Easter Eggs will be distributed to children in the crowd, courtesy of Millennium Stadium partners Nestle, there will be a club mascot race around the Stadium during the double-header interval and, for the adults, beer prices are reduced by £1 for every four pints bought.
