The Welsh Women’s Rugby Union (WWRU) has just appointed its first ‘Elite Co-ordinator’ following a £20,000 grant from the Trust’s Activate! grant scheme.
Zoe Eaton, 24, will run the WWRU’s Modern Apprenticeship Scheme, where the top 20 Welsh women rugby players under the age of 19 will study for NVQ Levels II and III in Sports Activity Leadership and Player Performance Analysis.
“This funding means that the WWRU has been able to employ someone who will ensure that Welsh women’s rugby will flourish in the years to come. The youngsters on the Scheme will qualify as coaches and then go out into the community to develop the game in schools and clubs,” said Richard Hodges, Director of Rugby for Women and Girls.
Zoe, originally from the Wirral, has lived in Cardiff for the last five years where she graduated with a First Class degree in Sport & Physical Education from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC).
The funding for the post has come from the MSCT’s ‘ACTIVATE!’ grant scheme, one of two grant schemes operated by the Trust, which offers funding opportunities to voluntary, charity and non-profit organisations as well as local authorities for national, regional or local projects involving sports, the arts, culture or the environment.
“We are delighted to be able to help develop rugby for women in Wales. The Modern Apprenticeship Scheme will help develop leadership, communication and performance levels across Wales – which is in line with the ethos of the Trust,” said Tom Jones OBE, Chairman of the MSCT.
The MSCT, a partnership between The Millennium Stadium plc and The Millennium Commission, was launched in October 2001. The charity, which receives its income through a levy of 25p on every ticket purchased for public events at the stadium, supports projects for people across Wales.
