Requiring 35 tries from the match at Blackwood, they managed only two – one of them being a penalty try. Fly half Jamie Davies added eight points to reach 515 in all matches this season for the Wizards – 451 of these coming in league rugby. Blackwood flanker David Tomsa was given the final conversion of the match in his last match before retirement. Sadly, the ball failed to rise off the ground!
Llandovery hit their target as they required five tries from their match against Rumney to jump over Carmarthen Quins into third place. They scored exactly five in a 42-8 victory, though their opponents finished the match with a late try by prop John Stringer.
Coach Dennis John ended a satisfactory first season in charge of Llanharan with their 16th win – by 27-8 over Bonymaen.
Carmarthen Athletic were champions of Division Two and finished with a hard game at Llantwit Fardre that they won 19-7. Hooker Ifan Charles was given the final conversion for the winners and succeeded.
Pentyrch-born wing Darren Berry scored two tries for UWIC against his former club Dunvant at the splendid Broadacre ground and honours ended even with four tries each and a 25-all draw resulting.
Abertillery were glad of a rare win – by 24-22 against Abercynon; second-placed Llangennech defeated Merthyr 43-20 with centres Mark Bowen and Paul Davies sharing four tries and when a late Matthew Jones kick missed narrowly it gave Brynmawr third place with a 12-9 win at Maesteg.
In Three (East), champions Penygraig lost their final match – their third in four days – by 10-5 at Pencoed and Bridgend Athletic were too strong for bottom club Mountain Ash by 36-12.
Tonmawr gained a good 16-14 win at Cardigan in Three (West) to end in sixth position and Aberystwyth surprised Aberavon Quins 25-14, while fourth spot went to Newcastle Emlyn, who were 27-13 winners in an entertaining match at Glynneath.
Blaengarw an Newport HSOB were due to meet twice in a week in Four (East) and the first meeting saw the Old Boys win 7-5, while Pill Harriers defeated Llanhilleth 35-5.
In Four (West) Skewen beat Penclawdd 31-14 and Maesteg Quins finished in third spot after a 27-12 victory away to Tenby United.
Central division rugby came to an end in Division Five as Taffs Well had another excellent win – by 30-25 at Nelson – in Division Six where Cilfynydd had their first win of the season by 7-6 over Neath Athletic and in Division Seven when BP Llandarcy won 25-17 at Gwernyfed.
The Northern divisions ended with three matches. In Division Six it was Machynlleth who beat Bangor by 50-0 and Llanidloes, who won at Bangor University by 31-21, while in the Promotion/Relegation match at Bethesda, Pwllheli remain in Division Five after resisting Colwyn Bay’s challenge by 24-17.
Fairwater finished second in Six (East), defeating Monmouth 19-17, while Ynysddu were 44-3 winners away to Nantyglo, while the Seven (West) season ended with champions Cwmgors beating runners-up Llanelli Wanderers by 22-18.
