We asked the question: “When did Wales first play the Barbarians?” – Well, the answer was on April 17, 1915.
Thank-you to the hundreds of people who took the time to reply. And nopw we can reveal the winners…
1. Raymond Hobby from Cardiff. This will be the first time ray, 40, has attended a sevens event, and he will be supporting Wales – naturally.
We asked him what was his best memory of Neil Jenkins as he replied “One that stands out for me is the second test in Melbourne for the British Lions watching Neil and Johnny Wilkinson warming up before the game in the area behind one of the goals kicking balls back and for to each other with pin point accuracy and of course the many, many points that he has scored for Wales”
2. Adam Evans, 33. Adam, a Harlech supporter has fond memories of the IRB World Sevens event on Hong Kong last year, and will be supporting Wales this weekend. He has seen the Barbarians on two previous occasions, once against Australia at Twickenham and once against Wales in Cardiff. His memories of Jenks are: “Loads of great memories of Jenks, including Paris (twice) and the Lions tour where he won the series from fullback. But the best has to be against England in the last game at Wembley. When he kicked the conversion, the entire stadium erupted – I’ve never seen anything like it before or since.”
3. Alwyn Brynley Ormond, from Llanelli. This will be the first ever IRB World Sevens event Alwyn, 38, has attended. But he has was present when Wales played the BaaBaa’s at the Millennium stadium last year (Wales lost 40-25) A Scarlet supporter, he says of Jenks: “My memories of Neil Jenkins is what a rugby player he has been such an ambassador for is club and Country, but coming on against Ireland in the home nations to put a penalty over under extreme pressure or England V Wales at Wembley Stadium, the list goes on and on.”
4. Matthew Jones, 26 Morriston. Matthew supports his local club Morriston and Swansea. This is the first IRB World Sevens event he has ever attended. But he is a Barbarians veteran, having seen them play against a few Welsh club sides on their old Easter tours, and Wales on a number of occasions.
We asked him for his memories of Neil Jenkins, and he said. “Playing against Ireland as a 19 year old with Scott Gibbs in 1990/91, and THAT kick against England in 1999.”
