Jenks In Cotton Wool

Wales legend Neil Jenkins is being wrapped in cotton wool as he prepares for his final season of top-class rugby.

Celtic Warriors coach Lynn Howells hopes that by getting Jenkins to train in isolation, his recent injury woes won’t bring an early end to a great career.

Howells said the wear and tear on Jenkins’ body – particularly his knees – meant the world Test points record-holder must stick to a personal training schedule from now on.

“Jenks has not trained with the group at all so far,” said Howells. “We are determined to manage his training schedule properly so we get the best out of him in his last season.

“He has a couple of physical complaints that are due to the huge amount of rugby he has played and they must be taken into account.

“It is going to be a similar thing to what Llanelli have done with Scott Quinnell, Neil must have a routine tailored to his own individual needs, and that is what we are working on.

“People have written him off saying that he will not be able to cope with the demands of regional rugby, but at the end of last season he played about six games in 10 days.

“If his body is prepared properly he will prove the doubters wrong. Knowing Neil as I do he will want to have a great season before he finally hangs up his boots.”
