Wales became the first of the Five Nations teams to play a World Cup qualifying match, having failed to reach the quarter-finals in 1991.
Wales set a World Cup record – which was broken the following day by Italy – when they topped a century of points against Portugal.
Neil Jenkins’ 11 conversions was also a world record, but again it only lasted a day. Nigel Walker equalled the national record with four tries and there were 16 tries in all as Portugal were pulverised.

Ieuan Evans picked up another hat-trick of tries as Wales guaranteed themselves a place in the 16-team 1995 finals.

Ieuan Evans set a new Welsh try-scoring record with a wonder score from halfway to make it 21 tries in 48 appearances.
This win avenged Wales‘ horrendous defeat in the same city in 1983.

Neil Jenkins equalled his own Welsh record of 24 points in a Test as he kicked the Italians to defeat at the Arms Park to ensure Wales finished their ranking campaign as Europe’s top qualifier. Jenkins landed seven penalties and a drop goal as he went through the 300 points barrier in international rugby and overtook Paul Thorburn (304) as the leading points scorer in Welsh international history.
