Newport And Swansea Extend Winning Runs

The gap between the top and bottom of the Welsh Premiership is getting larger, with table-toppers Newport and Swansea in crushing form yesterday.

Newport put a poor Llanelli side to the sword at Stradey Park, winning 44-17 with Wales Under-21 centre Scott Williams dotting down twice and the

Premiership’s leading try-scorer Craig Richards taking his season tally to seven.

Across at St Helens, Swansea hammered a cash-strapped Pontypridd side 49-20 in a one-sided match. It is one of the heaviest losses in Pontypridd’s proud history and their day-by-day survival is obviously affecting the players.

Llandovery’s hopes of recording their first victory and climbing off the bottom of the table were shattered by an 18-33 loss to Caerphilly at Virginia Park, while Cardiff’s miserable season continued with a 10-17 loss to Pontypool at the Arms Park.

Carmarthen Quins continued their fine season with a hard-fought 28-23 win over Bedwas after trailing 8-20 at the break, while Aberavon retained third place in the table with a 17-11 victory over Cross Keys thanks to a brace of tries to fullback Richie Price.

Results: Aberavon 17 Cross Keys 11, Caerphilly 33 Llandovery 18, Cardiff 10 Pontypool 17, Carmarthen Quins 28 Bedwas 23, Llanelli 17 Newport 44, Neath 29 Newbridge 23, Swansea 49 Pontypridd 20.
