And he is looking for much more from his side in the crunch Rugby World Cup pool D clash with Italy on Saturday.
“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise we have to step it up to win,” said Hansen.
“We didn’t play well, but we got the four points which we came for.”
And Hansen suggests the key to improvement within his side is concentration, particularly after a score or a good passage of play.
“When you are put under pressure like we were, you start to look inwards and it is after success we are most dangerous to ourselves.
“To be honest every time we got under pressure we went back and scored points and the sad thing was a lack of concentration allowed them back into the game.”
And Wales captain Colin Charvis agrees that his side must improve against Italy if they are going to meet the expectations of the nation and reach the quarter-finals.
“There are always high expectations in Wales and people want to see us be successful. Hopefully we can perform better,” said Charvis.
But Hansen’s opposite number, Italian coach John Kirwan, thinks he can give Wales a run for their money – although he was quick to claim the underdog tag.
“I don’t see us as favourites. We are underdogs by a very long way, but, if we get out there on Saturday and play the match of our lives there shouldn’t be much in it,” added Kirwan.
“They are well drilled and dangerous with the ball in hand and I think Steve Hansen and his team should be feeling very confident.
“We are under no pressure, we are tired but we are courageous. We’re going to have a good time. It doesn’t mean we’re not going to take it seriously, it’s just going to be a very serious party.”
