Wales fielded a much-changed squad against the Premiership All Stars in their first international of the season at Glamorgan Wanderers on Saturday with several young faces making their first appearance for the senior team. Hannah Szgetvari made her debut on the wing, and seemed unfazed by the step up to senior level making a couple of good breaks in the game. Catrina Nicolas also made her debut on the blindside having had a successful season in the Development squad last year. Wales Under 19s players Sophie Williams, Elen Evans and Amy Day all made appearances from the bench.

The Premiership All Stars contained experience in abundance. Ex Wales Captain Liza Burgess took to the field along side England’s Gill Burns – two of the most capped players in the history of women’s rugby. The squad also contained international players from across the world including Canada, England, Ireland and world champions New Zealand.

Wales started well, applying the pressure early on resulting in a penalty from the boot of fly-half Awen Thomas however it was the All Stars that put the first try on the scoreboard and continued to apply the pressure throughout the first half adding two more tries before the break.

Wales came back in the second half, retaining more possession resulting in a try for winger Louise Rickard converted by Awen Thomas. Non Evans made a good break later on in the half to score under the posts to bring the scores to 15-17.

However it was the Premiership All Stars that had the final word when good handling by the back line resulted in a try in the corner. The conversion was missed but it was enough to give them victory, 15-22.

It was an encouraging performance by Wales who will look to build on it when they meet the British Army in the second of their Six Nation warm up games on 26th November.
