Tries by fly half Llion Edwards, centre Huw Edwards and flanker Dan Burke with Llion kicking seven points, to lead Cwmbran 22-18 with ten minutes left in one of the most exciting ties in the third round of the newly-named Konica Minolta Cup.
“We held them on our line,” said Denbigh committeeman Jeff Jenkins. “And then in the final minute we went downfield and had a scrum, but they took it against the head.
“To Cwmbran’s credit they ran it blind and wing Gareth Groves did splendidly to beat our full back and score the match-winner at 23-22. Still, it was played in great spirit and was a good advert for the cup.”
Mark Withey, John Ford and Gary Coombes scored the earlier Cwmbran tries and Withey added a penalty goal.
Llangefni keep the North in it after a 44-7 win at Brynithel, though Rhos crashed out to Gorseinon and Denbigh could go through if Aberavon Quins do not travel next Saturday.
Llanharans 47-19 win away to Pill Harriers and Rumney’s 24-20 home loss to Brynmawr could see the pair meet in a rearranged league match on Saturday as their opponents Narberth and Treorchy will attempt to play their cup ties.
“Our strong pack won it,” said Brynmawr committeeman Karl Pickering. “It was up front where the game was decided, but we only scored a Jason Williams penalty in the second half as Rumney fought back.”
Stuart McIntyre and Henry Amadife scored Rumnery tries, but Williams, prop Matthew Price and wing David West gained the Brynmawr touchdowns.
David Bishop watched his club Old Illtydians gain a win at Cefn Cribbwr, but there was no replacement appearance for the coach, who was man-of-the-match in the final 20 years ago.
Carmarthen Athletic treasurer Richard Lewis was satisfied with his club’s 28-5 win over Kidwelly, saying: “They had several of our ex-players and are a good side, but we stopped them scoring until wing Aled Daniels went over right at
the finish.”
By that time, No 8 Graham Evans, wing Gavin Jones and former Neath scrum half Ricky Richards had scored Athletic tries and Julian Howells kicked 13 points.
Maesteg retained their unbeaten record this season as they dismissed fellow Division One club Llangennech by 25-8 with tries by Grant Epton (2), Karl Hocking and Ian Strang, as Mark David added a conversion and penalty against a Mark Jones penalty and a try by scrum half Chris Davies.
Whitland powered their way to a 31-0 win at Tredegar with tries by Gavin Morris, Lee Granville and Ben Armstrong and Aled Davies and Scott Penney shared the kicking.
Brynithel can be pleased with their entry to Round Four after a 16-13 win over Trinant despite conceding a penalty try. Nicky Meredith and Simon Creed scored the home tries and Chris Carpenter placed two penalty goals.
But 14 Round three matches failed to take place. Several bit the dust because of unfit grounds, but Langwm, who had received a walk-over in the last round, scratched five days before they were due to appear at Beddau and Fairwater, who lead Division Four South-East, did not turn up at Newcastle Emlyn.
Several other sides scratched, with New Tredegar walking-over at Oakdale and then letting half-back Gerwyn Pearson have a permit to Rhymney and score the winning try for that club!
The majority of the matches have been rearranged for Saturday 6 December.
