The Welsh side went down to their now traditional narrow defeat against their older Scottish rivals at Murrayfield in the curtain-raiser to the Celtic Cup final.

Despite enjoying territorial dominance, skipper Dan George’s side lacked precision in the vital moments and were left dreaming of what might have been.

All the scores came in the first half with Scotland centre Gary Law hitting
the mark with two out of three penalties, while Wales stand-off Gareth Williams-Davies could mamage only one success out of three.

Wales’s starting lineup was strong at the scrum and powerful in their driving play with prop Ian Jones and backrow men Luke Probert and Adam Powell particularly impressive.

The Scots were led by No 8 John Beattie, son the former Scotland and Lions No 8 of the same name, and contained a number of players with premier league expericence.

The Welsh defence, especially in midfield, proved resolute throughout, but poor handling let them down at vital moments.

The second half saw Scotland outside half David Blair, younger brother of
senior cap Michael, miss with one last penalty attempt, but Wales could not
even muster a shot at goal in the final 35 minutes.

Scorers.
Scotland – Pens: G Law (2).
Wales – Pen: G Williams-Davies.
