03/01 GERALD DAVIES HONOURED
Wales and British and Irish Lions legend Gerald Davies is awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to young people and to rugby in Wales.
Davies is best remembered for his try – one of 20 in 46 Tests – in the 1971 Five Nations match against Scotland.
The Scots were leading before Davies scored in the corner in the last minute. Backrower John Taylor then kicked his famous conversion to steal victory.
04/01 NEATH PROGRESS TO CELTIC LEAGUE FINAL
Fly-half Lee Jarvis scored 17 points as Neath strode into the Celtic League final with a convincing win over Cardiff at the Gnoll.
Neath led 17-0 after dominating the first half, before holding off a spirited Cardiff fightback and extending their lead through a clever Jarvis try and his typically excellent goal-kicking.
The Neath forwards – particularly frontrowers Duncan Jones and Barry Williams – ran themselves to a standstill in a superb display of support play.
The victory earned Neath a trip to Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium to play European heavyweights Munster in the Celtic League final on February 1.
07/01 WRU INFORMS SIX NATIONS COLLEAGUES OF A TEAM AXE
The Welsh Rugby Union officially informed the Six Nations Committee and its Six Nations colleagues that it will not be entering a team into this season’s ‘A’ team championship.
The decision to mothball the Wales A team was taken by the WRU Board of Directors at a meeting before Christmas as part of the Union’s move to cut costs.
17/01 SCARLETS PROGRESS TO HEINEKEN CUP QUARTER-FINALS
The sizzling Scarlets surged through to the quarter finals of the Heineken Cup with a clinical 34-8 demolition job on the woeful Warriors at Hughenden.
Not only did the men from Stradey Park complete their qualification task in devastating style – they also boosted their hopes of a home tie by improving their try-tally.
There was no way back for the Scots after they were rocked by a five-touchdown burst in 18 first-half minutes and wing Garan Evans was the assassin-in-chief with a hat-trick.

Steve Hansen celebrated one year in office as the Wales National Coach on Friday, 7 February, 2003.
‘The time has flown by and my only focus at present is on preparing the team to play in the Six Nations and trying to get Wales off to a winning start in the championship for the first time since 1997,‘ said Hansen.

Wales had a dream start to their Six Nations campaign against Spain at the Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday. The Welsh side had never beaten the Spaniards before, losing 20-0 in Madrid last season, but they put together an outstanding performance to see off the visitors 34-0.
21/02 WALES U21 CRUSH ENGLAND
Wales under-21’s gained a fifth successive victory over their English Counterparts with a 35-9 victory at Neath.
It was the third win of the season for coach Chris Davey and his team, following those over New Zealand and Italy.
22/02 WALES RESTORE PRIDE
Wales restored some pride and sense of self belief with a creditable performance against England, eventually losing 26-9.
Steve Hansen’s eight changes made a huge impact on the side and the no frills approach against the top ranked side in the world created a contest in which Wales always gave as good as they got.
From start to finish the Welsh side pounded into the English and by the end the Grand Slam hopefuls had lost Jason Robinson, Ben Kay and Jonny Wilkinson as casualties of war.
Two tries in the third quarter finally undid the gallant Welsh effort, but Johnson’s side left the Welsh capital well aware they had been in a hell of a battle as they took their second step towards a possible Grand Slam.

Wales coach Steve Hansen has nominated four captains for the two Test summer tour to Australia and New Zealand next month.
Colin Charvis, Martyn Williams, Robin McBryde and Stephen Jones have been given the task of acting as leaders on the three week trip as Welsh rugby follows a tried and tested route used by many other sports.
‘The reason for naming four tour captains is because we are trying to grow leadership qualities within the squad. It gives us greater options and means the work load off the field can be shared around four senior players,’ said Hansen.

Division 4 (East) – Winners could be Brecon or Rhyddyfelin, as the latter have come with a late run and if they defeat must beat Cwmbran at home on Thursday, the title will go to them.

Pontyberem needed a point from a home match against Kidwelly to pip Bryncoch for the title and duly scored six tries in a 39-0 victory.

Not only did the Sarries win their last three matches in six days, but after gaining the title over Tredegar Ironsides and then beating bottom club St Peter’s, but they also relegated Brynithel to third after a 16-7 win and New Tredegar moved to second by getting through 32-16 at Barry.

Glanmor Grifiths has announced that he is ending a 19 year association with the Welsh Rugby Union and will not be seeking re-election at the Annual General Meeting on July 26.
Mr Griffiths has been Honorary Treasurer since 1984, Chairman of the WRU General Committee since 1997 and Chairman of Millennium Stadium plc for the last six years.
He said, ‘After much heart-searching and a great deal of sadness I have decided not to stand for any position with either the Welsh Rugby Union or Millennium Stadium plc.’

The Welsh Development XV have returned from Scotland with a 100% record….. Following their 69-0 victory against the Scottish Students in their first game, Wales won their second game against Scotland U23 15-7.
14/06 AUSTRALIA TOO STRONG FOR BRAVE WALES
Wales produced a brave performance at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium in front of a crowd of over 63,000 before eventually falling 10-30 to the World Cup holders.
Steve Hansen´s side went behind early to two Wendell Sailor tries, but showed grit and perseverence to come away with a creditable performance.
Wales captain Martyn Williams said. ‘I think we showed a few people we can play a bit. We’ve got some good young players, things are looking good.’

Wales slumped to a record defeat to New Zealand as they were punished by eight tries at the Telstra Stadium in Hamilton.
It was a record eighth successive Test defeat for Steve Hansen’s side and came after a Stephen Jones penalty in the sixth minute had given the tourists an early lead.
Yet despite containing the All Blacks in the first quarter, once Doug Howlett had been worked clear for the home side’s first try after 21 minutes the floodgates began to open.

‘We simply made too many turnovers,’ Wales coach Steve Hansen said. ‘You can’t give that much ball away and also suffer a 21-6 penalty count against you and expect to win.

Under their previous guise, the west Wales side had never beaten the Irish province, and to record the win at fortress Thomond Park is a feat that means the Scarlets are considered serious championship contenders.

Michael Owen has been forced to withdraw from the Wales squad set to head off for the Rugby World Cup in Australia on Sunday, because of a back injury.
The 22-year-old Dragons second row, who scored his first try for Wales on winning his eighth cap against Scotland last month, will be replaced by 1999 RWC veteran Chris Wyatt.
‘Michael injured his back prior to going on our warm weather training camp to Lanzarote and, after seeking specialist advice, we have decided not to risk him by taking him to Australia,’ said Wales coach Steve Hansen.

WALES 27 TONGA 20: Wales stuttered their way to showdown against Italy for a quarter-final place with an unconvincing 27-20 victory over pool rivals Tonga.
A moment of opportunism from Gareth Cooper and a brief glimpse of Iestyn Harris magic to create Martyn Williams’ try were the only highlights in an otherwise uninspired performance.
Tonga outscored Wales three tries to two but crucially Pierre Hola missed four kicks at goal as Wales clung on against the South Sea island minnows for their second win of the World Cup.

WALES 27 ITALY 15:Wales qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals and a probable showdown with England by completing a revenge mission against Italy in Camberra. As Wales prepare for the World Cup showdown against New Zealand on Sunday, youngsters across the country can look forward to a revolution in the junior game.
The Sports Council for Wales’s flagship programme Dragon Sport is teaming up with the Welsh Rugby Union to introduce TAG rugby to primary school children. More than 200 youngsters from across Cardiff and the Vale celebrated TAG’s introduction on Sunday immediately after the Wales v New Zealand game
Having been piloted, first in the Vale of Glamorgan and then Cardiff, TAG rugby is now being rolled out right across Wales with the support of local authorities and rugby clubs.

WALES 17 ENGLAND 28: Wales bowed out of the Rugby World Cup in glory after a heroic performance against England in Brisbane.
Steve Hansen’s men outscored the English three tries to one with another stunning performance that proved the display against New Zealand was no fluke.
But the boot of Jonny Wilkinson did the damage as an unconvincing England outfit scrambled their way through to a semi-final against France.

Wales coach Steve Hansen made no attempt to hide his disappointment after the 28-17 defeat to England but was proud of the efforts of his players.
Hansen’s brave side gave New Zealand a scare last week before bowing out with their heads held high against England.
