Martin Johnson, the captain of the World Cup winning English team, is delighted at the interest shown in the game by Welsh women.
According to WRU figures, there are now nearly 2,000 women rugby players across Wales, including 20 senior clubs, more than 40 Junior teams and 90 ‘Tag and Touch’ rugby teams.
‘It’s great news that the women of Wales are taking up rugby,’ said Johnson. ‘I’m sure there’s nothing they enjoy more than running around a rugby pitch. Participating in any sport is an excellent way to spend your leisure time.’
WWRU Business Manager Laura Oakes commented, “We are delighted that women’s rugby has been recognised by Martin. We are receiving increased coverage from the media and the backing of such high profile players helps to continue the growth of the sport in Wales.”
Meanwhile, S4C’s drama series about a women’s rugby team returns this weekend. Amdani will be broadcast on Sunday at 9pm.
