Coach Billy Ridler, who spent 21 yerars with Newport Saracens as a splendid fly half, grinned with delight and said: ‘I even got on for a few minutes and when we heard that Llandaff North had won at Llantwit Major, we knew that we did not have to win our final game at Ferndale.

“Our forwards coach Tony Healan played at prop and our half backs Paul Rees and Richard Lester were great while Barry Greening and Julian Trimmingham both scored a brace of tries.

“I am told it is the first title the club has won since league rugby began and though we lost one match, by 12-6 at home to Llantwit Major, we did not lose in the cup, going out 8-8 at home to Cwmavon!’

Trinant have almost taken the East title after winning by 27-7 at Machen and only Oakdale can catch them, though they lost second place to Gwernyfed, who beat Bettws 14-10, but are running out of games.

In the North, Colwyn Bay extended their lead to four points over Denbigh, whose match with Machynlleth was off and the Bay defeated Bethesda 27-13, but Denbigh still have two matches in hand. Resolven stayed in front in the South-West,

but both Aberavon Green Stars and Tonna won to stay in touch. In the West it is still Cefneithin out in front but they lost 15-12 at Aberaeron and Crymych closed to three points behind after winning at Pontyates.
