Scarlets Stars Downed By Illness

Eight Llanelli Scarlets players have been laid low by a sickness bug three days before their Heineken Cup quarter-final against Biarritz on Friday evening. Robin McBryde, Iestyn Thomas, Dwayne Peel, Simon Easterby, Matthew Watkins, Chris Wyatt, Adam Jones and Gareth Bowen had to be quarantined after picking up the virus on the trip to Scotland last weekend.

Coaches Gareth Jenkins and Nigel Davies responded by rejigging the schedule for the week, cancelling a planned training session yesterday and substituting an in-depth video analysis session in its place.

”Some of the boys have been feeling low but we think it is just a 24-hour bug that spread when we travelled back on the plane from playing Borders,” said Davies.

”We were in a confined space and that obviously provides more scope for viruses to be passed on.

The Scarlets have a crunch match against Biarritz Olympique on Friday night at Stradey park, and disruption to preparations is a distraction coach Jenkins could well do without.

The Welsh region, currently top of the Celtic League, are under immense pressure to perform in the Heineken Cup after disappointing exits in recent years.

They were eliminated at the quarter-final stage to Perpignan last season in their previous guise as Llanelli RFC.
