The blonde fullback’s contract with The Dragons is up at the end of next season, but he wants to extend it by two years – despite being asked to come home by South African officials.

“I’m looking to stay for good,” he says. “South Africa want me back, so we’ll have to wait and see.

“But I’ve got a family now and I’d rather commit myself here totally and maybe not play international rugby again,” said Montgomery, hinting that he’s satisfied with his 50 caps for his country.

Montgomery has been in stunning form for The Dragons this season. He missed six months of rugby after being banned for shoving a touch judge in a club game but has more than made up for lost time.

He scored 23 points in Friday night’s Celtic League victory over the Cardiff Blues, taking his total to 124 in his last nine appearances.

Dragons and Wales coach Mike Ruddock added: “If he stays it would be huge for the region.

“He’s a real pro and even on his day off he spends the day kicking, getting all the kids in his area to help him.”
