Jewish Rugby World Cup 2005

With just over a year to go to the 2005 Maccabiah in Israel, the Maccabi Rugby efforts begin in earnest to produce a team that can win the Jewish Rugby World Cup. The Great Britain team – better known as the British Zions – has never won the Maccabiah competition, having to content itself previously with silver and bronze medals. “Now is the time to change all that,” says coach, Tony “Charlie” Faulkner, the legendary former Wales and British Lion prop forward and in charge of the team at the 1989 and 1997 Games. To spearhead that effort, Maccabi Rugby wants to hear from any Jewish rugby player who thinks he’s got what it takes to be a part of the 26-man squad that will go to Israel next July. Players are asked to send their rugby CV’s (age, height, weight, career resume) to britishzions@yahoo.co.uk by August 14. Trial matches will held between September and December 2004, players assessed and a squad duly selected. In the knowledge that their opponents will be from most of the rugby playing countries around the world, but particularly South Africa and the United States will include full internationals and provincial players, the Zions want to be sure they take their strongest ever squad to Israel. So if you are the next Jewish Charvis, or Llewellyn, they want you to help them win their very own Rugby World Cup.
