Thiel was making his 37th test appearance and followed a week after Scarlets forward David Hodges played his 54th and final test for the United States – also against France. Hodges, who made his debut for the USA in 1996, skippered them on 28 occasions.

When prop forward John Thiel came on as a replacement for Canada in the second half of their test match against France on Saturday, he became the 179th player from the Llanelli/Llanelli Scarlets to win an international cap.
