Konica Minolta Cup Preliminary Round Round-up
Abertillery came back into Welsh rugby after a season’s absence, playing now as Abertillery BG, and back with them, also out of retirement, came fly half Mark Williams.
The 36-year-old, who played his premier division rugby with Abertillery and Neath, kept the new side ticking along as they defeated Old Penarthians 31-7.
It was the first of two matches on the same pitch as Penarth followed by winning their cup tie against Abercarn, but it was a great day for Williams, who has twice suffered broken legs.
Abertillery tries came from Andrew Mason, Gareth Davies, Lee Bowden, Jonathan Blake and Gareth Collier with Williams converting three of them.
Tredegar had to play their ‘derby’ match against Markham on Abertillery Park and led 13-0 at the break with a try by Steve Evans and eight points from the boot of Daryll Carter. Markham brothers Shaun and Scott Trollope hit back tries that Shaun converted, but a Dan Morris try and five more Carter points took Tredegar through.
Closest match was at Bala as a scratch Llandeilo outfit were 23-16 down after 77 minutes when Mark Moon scored in the corner and fly half Emyr Davies placed a touchline conversion for a win by 3-2 on try-count.
Ogmore Vale did splendidly to go to Milford and win 12-8 with tries by Phil Bissmire and Richard Berezai, whilst South African fly half Darren Herbst scored a try and two conversions as Machen touched down eight tries in a 51-3 at New Dock Stars.
Newport Saracens powered through against Brecon 43-15 with six triest, while wing Steve Powers notched four tries as Penallta crushed Rhayader by 94-5.
Wing David Upton scored three of the seven tries as powerful Pontycymmer defeated Pontyclun 46-7 at Lawrence Park.
A total of nine sides scratched, including Cwmgors, who won Division Four South-West in May, but failed to appear at Felinfoel, for whom Wales forward Emyr Lewis was denied his first game in charge.
