LEWIS LOOKS TO VARSITY MATCH

The promising outside-half from Whitland has already been spotted by Wasps after racking up caps for Wales at various age grades.

But now he is ready to sit his toughest exam yet when Cambridge and Oxford go head to head in the 123rd Varsity Match in front of 50,000 at Twickenham.

“My main ambition has always been to play top flight rugby in Wales so hopefully the Varsity Match will be a shop window for me,” said 23-year-old Lewis.

“There’s not many who can boast that they’ve played in front of that many people at Twickenham.

“I’ve already put some feelers out about playing in Wales – but with so many watching this game, this would be the best way to catch the right person’s eye.”

Politics student Lewis, who graduates in June, certainly studies the right subject for life in Welsh rugby. But he also has all the right qualifications to make a name for himself.

Having represented Wales at under-18, 19, 21 and student level, Lewis won the British University title with Brunel and the English Under-21s crown with Wasps in 2002.

“It was a great year with Wasps,” he said. “I had a development contract and trained full-time with the first team including Rob Howley.

“That was amazing because he’s something of a legend – especially for a Welshman. It was great to learn from him.

“The only problem was that Alex King was firmly set in the first team so the chance to play and study at Cambridge was too good to miss.

“We drew 11-11 last year but retained the title as defending champions. This time we aim to hold onto the title far more convincingly.”
