SCARLETS PLAYING FOR PRIDE

And last season’s losing finalists know a victory over the improving Scarlets will give them a crucial home quarter-final, but they won’t have everything their way. The Scarlets are finding their feet after a poor start to the season and were desperately unlucky to lose to Northampton last weekend.

Gareth Jenkins’ men are rank outsiders for this match, but no one can write them off, as the proud players from the famous club will want to upset the odds and register a victory against the French aristocrats.

Scarlets Director of Rugby Gareth Jenkins has urged his players to play for pride as they head to Stade Ernest Wallon this Friday; “We are out, but there is pride at stake. Toulouse are a great team and this is the first time we have played them out there. If we want something out of this tournament we have to go there on Friday and wear the jersey proudly”.

“For us the pressure is off, but Toulouse will be very aware of their need to win the fixture to top the Pool 3 table, we’ll be looking to deliver a big game and having watched them throughout the group I’m confident in our ability to compete on Friday” Gareth Jenkins.

Having found ourselves in unfamiliar territory this week in failing to make European Cup quarter final qualification, Gareth Jenkins today praised the Heineken Cup for the high level of competition brought to domestic leagues as a result of the standard of rugby required to compete in Europe.

“What the tournament does is ask the most of you. It brings together a number of sides who are very similar in ability, but it is the small margin of error of the competition that builds towards the theatre and drama of the competition” Gareth Jenkins.

Having taken a knock to the neck on Sunday, Gareth Jenkins will rest Iestyn Thomas ahead of this weekend’s fixture in preparation for the Six Nations competition. Phil John returns to the number one position, while Scarlets Academy product David Maddocks features on the bench.
