CELTIC BATTLE RESUMES

The Ospreys will be looking to open up their lead at the top this week as their nearest rivals Munster enjoy a ‘bye week’. The Neath-Swansea side entertain Ulster on Friday night. Last year’s runners up have had a less than convincing season and travel to Wales knowing that the Ospreys have not lost in Swansea this season. However the leaders will need to be on their guard as they have come unstuck on the last four games against Irish opposition.

Also on Friday night Edinburgh Rugby, buoyed by their surprise win over Perpignan in the Heineken Cup last weekend, will face the Llanelli Scarlets. However the Scots have failed to put back to back wins together for over a year now and the Llanelli side could become the second placed Welsh side should they win and the Newport Gwent Dragons slip up against Glasgow.

That game is on Saturday afternoon and the Dragons after five successive away defeats in all competitions will be glad to be back on home soil as they look to resist the challenge of the Scarlets.  Glasgow Rugby however showed some fine away form in their narrow Heineken Cup loss to Northampton last Friday and if they should breakdown the Rodney Parade fortress they would leapfrog the Dragons and move back into fourth place.

Elsewhere on Saturday Cardiff Blues travel to Connacht, looking to end a run of five successive defeats in the league which has seen they drop to tenth place. In contrast Connacht, in a European semi final for the second time running after their win over Grenoble, will be looking for the victory that could move them back above Ulster in the battle to finish as third Irish side.

The round’s final game sees Leinster travel to the Borders, anxious to keep the top two in their sights. Defeat against Munster leaves them 10 points adrift of the leaders, and with The Borders now looking for their third successive home league win the Dubliners may have a tricky task if they are to make inroads on the top two.
