The 24 year old singer from Neath, whose debut album ‘Premiere,’ went straight to the top of the classical music charts, was one of the first artists to offer to perform at the event. And, after kicking-off proceedings with an unaccompanied rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’, she’s hoping that the capacity 61,000 strong crowd will join her in singing the football anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’

“It’s a great song that everyone knows and the words are very poignant and appropriate,” said Katherine, who sang the same song before the Rugby League Challenge Cup final at the stadium last year. “I’m thrilled to be able to do something to help the victims of the tsunami and to be opening the show.”

Katherine first heard of the disaster in a phone call from her uncle who was on holiday at the time in Bali.

“He rang to tell us that he was OK because the area where he was staying had escaped. At first I didn’t understand what he was talking about but when I switched on the television and saw the pictures of the devastation I was horrified,” she said.

Katherine will be the first of 21 acts taking part in the seven hour long event which aims to raise a million pounds for the relief fund. Fans who snapped up tickets in just three days were warned by Stadium General Manager Paul Sergeant to make sure they were in their seats in good time for the 3.15pm start.

“The rest of the running order will not be announced but the major acts will be spread throughout the event,” he said.
