“We needed that win and hopefully we can go on a bit of a run and maybe win the Championship,” Henson said. “I knew I was going to kick it, I’ve been kicking them all week. I don’t tend to feel pressure. I’ve built myself up in the papers all week and I knew I had to deliver.”
Henson said the Wales team did it for the crowd: “They were superb, they deserve this win as much as we do.”
Hooker Mefin Davies added: “It was the first game of the RBS Six Nations and against England, there were a few nerves. We didn’t play as well as we can, but in the end it doesn’t matter, we got the win. After the narrow losses in the autumn, that’s a big relief.
“I enjoyed the game personally, but we didn’t play that well. We were a bit rusty because we haven’t played together for a while, but I don’t care! We won. It’s just nice to come away without fulfilling our potential but still having the win. International rugby is a tough game and both sides knew that one penalty could decide it, as it turned out. I gave up one penalty and felt awful.
“I thought Gavin would kick it, I have a lot of faith in him and Stephen Jones. Italy will be tough next week. I had the misfortune to be part of the team that lost over there two years ago, so we won’t be underestimating them.”
