Owen salutes career highlight

“We’re all delighted with the win,” he said. “I didn’t think we played as well as we could have, though. We didn’t finish off enough moves. We’ve had so many narrow defeats and at 9-8 we could have had another one. I think the fact we avoided the defeat showed the character of this team. We just kept banging away and Gavin produced a great kick at the end. This has to be the highlight for me so far.”

Wales Defence Coach, Clive Griffiths, said Wales had ‘turned the corner’ after holding the Rugby World Cup Champions tryless: “It’s always a nice statistic and they didn’t look like scoring a try, to be fair. We were a bit more lateral today and up fast. I think that we may have caught England a bit unawares.

“The only time they got in behind us, around the short side, we scrambled well, which I was happy with. We did target their centres. I told the boys that Mathew Tait was young and that he was going to have one of two games; either he was going to be brilliant or we were going to rattle him. Fortunately, it was the latter.

“We are a difficult side to break down, but this win doesn’t mean we’ve arrived defensively, we’ve got a long way to go.”

Griffiths went on to say there were a couple of areas he would be looking at: “I thought our kick-chase game wasn’t as good as it could be, and the boys perhaps need to be a bit more vocal, but I was very pleased with the performance. This win hopefully means we’ve turned a corner, and we can go on with it.”
