Cooper confident of quick return

Cooper confident of quick return

Cooper, who is battling with the Scarlets’ Dwayne Peel for both the Wales and British Lions No.9 jerseys, lasted barely sixty seconds of the second half before limping off and immediately wrapping his right calf in ice.

Scarlets Coach Gareth Jenkins, who assisted Northern Hemisphere Team Coach Clive Woodward on Saturday, said: “We’re optimistic Gareth will be okay for Murrayfield. It’s a soft-tissue injury, he’s basically taken a stamp on it and he’s uncomfortable, but the medical people here aren’t too concerned.”

Cooper played well in a losing effort as the Southern Hemisphere XV romped to a 54-19 victory, with Australian fullback Chris Latham starring with a try double. If Cooper doesn’t recover in time for the trip to Edinburgh, his place in the Wales twenty-two will go to the man who replaced him at Twickenham; Scarlets giant Mike Phillips.

Blues prop John Yapp had a good run-out on Saturday, with backrower Jonathan Thomas and centres Ceri Sweeney and Mark Taylor showing some good touches in the free-flowing game in front of 40,000 fans.
