Aberavon again lived up to their ‘Wizards’ nickname as they followed their win over Neath by knocking out Newport 18-17. The Black and Ambers were 18-0 down, but scored three tries and almost snatched it in the closing minutes. Llanelli put out Carmarthen Quins by 21-8 at Stradey Park and keep up their splendid cup record over the years, while Bridgend were 24-15 winners at Beddau, though the Division One club fought hard and scored two tries.
Second Division (West) club Banwen were always chasing the game at home to Pontypridd, but had a splendid second spell to close the gap to 41-17 at the finish. David Flanagan scored 16 points for Ponty and Craig Hughes notched 12 for Banwen.
PREMIER DIVISION
Llandovery gained vital points with a surprising 55-9 win at Llanharan, who now appear doomed. UWIC student Gareth Morgan made a timely return to score 21 points for the Drovers and hooker Aled Gravell ran in three tries.
Bottom club Newbridge fell 24-11 to neighbours Pontypool, for whom young fly half Sam Mills scored a brace of tries and on Easter Monday, leaders Neath thrashed Aberavon by 80-0 with skipper Gareth Morris and wing Aled Brew scoring try hat-tricks and James Hook (6) and replacement Shaun Connor (4) converting ten of the 12 touchdowns.
DIVISION 1
Leaders Maesteg were good 45-16 winners at Builth Wells as skipper Karl Hocking scored three tries to set a record of 119 in league play and Bonymaen won their eighth successive match as they gained a 42-5 success at Bridgend Athletic.
Whitland kept up their promotion hopes by smashing Llangennech 36-3 but at the other end of the table, bottom club Brynmawr fell 46-12 at home to Fleur de Lys. In the only other match played, Carmarthen Athletic and Narberth shared six tries, but the Athletic won 31-24 thanks to 16 points from the boot of Dan Jones.
