When the teams lined up for the national anthems, the Scots were dwarfed by the beefy Welshmen but size does not always count in rugby and it was the Welsh who were on the backfoot in the first half.
The Scots played with panache but could not get the ball over the line. The final pass often went astray to leave half a dozen tries on the table in that first half. The Scots earned three kickable penalties from their early domination but all three were missed.
Wales led 8-0 at half-time, their points coming from a fine piece of finishing from right wing Darren Daniel and, as the half drew to a close, left wing Aaron Bramwell kicked a close-range penalty. The Welsh gained more possession in the second half and made it count. Flanks Stuart Phillips and Benjamin Lewis barged over and there was no stopping big lock Will Jones from close quarters.
The Welsh pack drove over for a late try and replacement wing Jonathan Spratt finished neatly for a brace of tries.
Scotland right wing Jonathan Alston scored his team’s two tries, the first came when he followed up a grubber by fly half Greg Cottrell, and the second after he intercepted on the halfway line.
