Maesteg ran in seven tries – one each by Gavin Ronan, Alun Brown, John Devereux, Marcus Salisbury, Mark David, Kevin Baldwin and Gareth Thomas, though Builth gained three tries in reply. Fleur de Lys just edged a 25-21 win at Tonmawr with a late try, despite two home efforts by Adrian Mainwaring, while Blackwood stopped Bonymaen’s winning run by 17-13 and Beddau pounded Carmarthen Athletic by 40-9 with Brett Davey gaining one of the six tries and kicking five conversions.
The UWIC students lost a BUSA semi-final in midweek, but bounced back with a splendid 25-10 win over Llangennech that saw Ben Rose, Ryan Harris and Phil Dolman score tries and Rhys Edwards kicked 10 points.
DIVISION TWO
Ystrad Rhondda took a firm grip of the East by winning 35-20 at Rumney, but Merthyr brought off the shock by winning 15-10 at Llantwit Fardre and Abercynon joined the race for promotion after getting home 15-6 at Tredegar, while Stuart Jarman notched a try hat-trick in Tredegar’s 28-21 win at Hirwaun.
West leaders Waunarlwydd and Cwmllynfell both won again and this could be the last title to be decided in Wales as they meet at Cwmllynfell on May 14.
Cwmllynfell were in tremendous form, blitzing Felinfoel by 49-0, while Waunarlwydd crushed third-placed Dunvant by 46-15.
In both sections, the relegation battles hotted up with Tondu, Cwmaqvon and Newcastle Emlyn pulling off fine wins in the West.
DIVISION THREE
Bargoed owed it to half-backs Jamie Howells and Matthew Lewis as they kept their 100% record in the East and became the third club – behind Nantyglo and Bala – to win a title with a narrow 18-14 win at Abercarn.
Pill remained second after a 18-10 win at New Tredegar and Abergavenny and Rhymney also were winners.
Loughor in the West edged nearer the title with a 38-3 success at Llandeilo, though Gorseinon and Penclawdd gained huge away victories. Rhydyfelin and Mountain Ash face a battle for the South-East top spot after both won again, but gallant Ruthin fell behind after losing at Tylorstown. In the South-West, leaders Maesteg Quins fell at Bryncoch by 16-10 as the chasing Seven Sisters and Aberavon Quins gained three-pointers and Glynneath averted defeat for only the second time this season after drawing 16-all at Alltwen.
DIVISION FOUR
Pontllanfraith need one point to become East champions after an 8-7 win at Chepstow and lead Tredegar Ironsides by nine points, but the latter have one game in hand.
Amman Utd are on the brink of the West title after a 46-8 win at Milford Haven, though Cefneithin’s 21-10 win at Pontarddulais forces Amman to go at least one week more.
Penarth threw the South-East title fight wide open again after a memorable home win over leaders Aberdare, which let Fairwater back in after they had defeated Llandaff 20-15. The game between Fairwater and Aberdare on Saturday will be a huge one for both clubs.
Tonna are on the brink of the South-West title after Resolven fell amazingly at home to Taibach by 17-9 and Tonna had won 33-18 at Trebanos. One win from two matches would give Tonna the title, while Morriston finish third after a battling Pyle had just gone down by 29-22.
In the North, Llangefni stepped nearer the crown with a 44-5 drubbing of Pwllheli and they need three points from three matches to finish top with Mold second after a 57-12 in at Caernarfon.
DIVISION FIVE
Bethesda clinched promotion from the North in second place behind title winners Bala, who are nine points clear at the top with both having one match remaining.
Nantyglo remained unbeaten in the East with their 21st successive win and their narrow 23-16 victory over St Alban’s leaves them one match to play, while the ‘Buns’ have a local derby against t Joseph’s to go, but could still be overtaken for runners-up by fast-finishing Garndiffaith.
In theSouth-West, Birchgrove gained an upset win at Abercrave by 19-3 and could still pinch top place as they have three games left to Abercrave’s one and are four points behind.
The South-East is still between five clubs, though outh wales Police have probably lost out after a home defeat by Cilfynydd, who are battling with Porth, Penallta and Cefn Coed.
Leaders Pembroke crashed 29-25 at home to second-placed New Dock Stars in the West and that means that with two matches each remaining, Pembroke need a maximum of four points to be assured of the win. The most amazing result saw Llanybydder gain a 14-5 victory at Llangwm.
