Skipper Lee Taylor was one of 10 try scorers as his team out-did the class of 93, who beat the Royal Regiment of Wales 93-12. Taylor helped himself to two tries, as did Darryl Carter, Dan Morris, Matt Penny and Simon King, while Carter ended the match with 29 points as he added nine conversions. Tredegar will now meet Lampeter in the next round.
Tonmawr gave last season’s Three East winners Bargoed a taste of what life will be like in the upper echelons of the ASDA Leagues as the Two West side earned themselves a first round tie at the end of the month against Cwmtwrch. The boot of Austin Howells just managed to out-do that of Bargoed’s prolific Jamie Howells and there were four home tries, two from Ken Morris to the visitors’ two.
Welsh Districts side Glyncoch notched a famous victory as they earned the biggest scalp in their club’s history with a 16-15 home win over Three South-East side Treorchy. Full back Lee Goddard grabbed all the points for Glyncoch in the first half as he ran to the posts for a try. He added the simple conversion and a penalty. Even so, Treorchy were 15-10 ahead at the interval thanks to two tries in response, but two penalties from replacement outside half Dean Young earned victory for the underdogs and a first round date with Haverfordwest.
There was drama at Old Penarthians’ Cwrt-y-vil ground in the battle between the two Five South-East sides; the Old Pens and Rhiwbina. With the scores locked at 10-10 in the fourth minute of injury time the home side conceded a penalty on their 10 metre line. Up stepped Rhiwbina outside-half Bleddyn Davies and over went the match winning kick to stun the home side. Rhiwbina will now meet Betws in the next round.
Heol-y-Cyw had an extra penalty to thank for their 29-26 victory at Mold in a game that saw both sides score four tries. They will now meet Trimsaran.
Ruthin kept the north Wales flag flying high with a 40-12 win at Talywain that included seven tries. That earned them trip to Mumbles, who were 52-0 home winners over Llandaff North.
Gilfach Goch ran in nine tries in their 64-6 demolition of Cefn Coed and will now meet New Dock Stars, while Brynithel trounced St David’s 62-0 away from home to earn a home tie with Tycroes next round.
