The hard-hitting wing was originally due to leave the Welsh region next May but has been allowed to return home to Brisbane after nearly seven years at Stradey Park. After making his debut in 1998 for Llanelli RFC, Finau made over 200 appearances for club and later the region, featuring in both of Llanelli’s Heineken Cup semi-final appearances.

“Salesi’s contract is due to terminate next May and by mutual consent we have agreed to release Salesi from his contract to enable him to return to his home in Brisbane,” said Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher. “Sal has been a wonderful clubman for both Llanelli RFC and the Scarlets – a terrific professional and one of the nicest people I have ever met in the game.

“His dedication to the game and indeed his contribution to the town of Llanelli has been outstanding. His work in the community and particularly in the schools has been terrific and all at Stradey wish him, Karren and the children the very best for the future”.

Finau’s departure comes following agreed quotas on non-Welsh qualified players eligible to play for the four regions in the Celtic League, Powergen Cup and Heineken Cup.

“I have had a truly wonderful time at Llanelli and have been very happy living in the town” added Salesi. “I have no regrets and wish to thank everyone at Stradey, the Chief Executive and the Coaching staff, who have helped me enjoy my time here so much.

“I am sure that the Scarlets will again become a major force in Europe”.
