NEWPORTS WIN RUN COMES TO AN END

The Welsh All Blacks, coached by former Wales backrower Rowland Phillips, won a tight game 19-9 to keep in touch with league leaders Pontypridd. After 39 straight home victories dating back to February 2003, Newport fell to the boot of centre James Hook (five goals) and a last-minute try to Neath winger and Wales Under-19 skipper Jonathan Spratt. Newport kept in touch through the boot of Aled Thomas (three goals).

Pontypridd stayed on top of the league courtesy of a 39-22 win at Swansea, with Cardiff Blues utility back Matthew Nuthall scoring one of his side’s five tries as the All Whites fell to their fifth straight loss.

Aberavon fly-half Jamie Davies became the first Premiership player to score 100 points this season when his four penalty goals helped the Wizards to a 22-16 victory at Cross Keys.

A penalty try helped unbeaten Bridgend to a hard-fought 20-12 win at Ebbw Vale that took the Ravens to second place on the table, while three tries gave Cardiff a 21-13 win over Llandovery their first victory of the season.

A desperately unlucky Maesteg side were pipped 11-14 by Pontypool, with fly-half Paul Smithson hitting an upright with a last-minute penalty attempt and try-scoring winger Grant Epton going wide with a dropped-goal effort.

Glamorgan fullback Marcus Leach scored two tries in the Wanderers’ 27-20 win over Carmarthen Quins, while Ceiron Thomas’s four goals were enough to give Llanelli a 12-11 victory at Bedwas.
