Llanharan scrum-half Greg Jones proved the difference between the two sides with his 16-point haul that included four penalties and conversions of both tries from Gary Williams and flanker Aled Llewellyn. Llewellyn was later yellow carded as tensions spilled over in a dramatic clash that also saw Newbridge pair Gareth Short and Rhys Revells sent to the sin bin and the visitors earn a penalty try. Andrew Oliver got Newbridge’s other try but it was Llanharan celebrating at the final whistle.
Fourth-placed Beddau took advantage of that result to move to within a point of Newbridge with a workmanlike 24-7 victory over a Caerphilly team bedeviled by inconsistency. Lock Damien Adams and flanker Steve Cole both went over for Beddau in the first half though visitors Caerphilly hit back with a stunning length of the field try, finished by wing Craig Marshman, to stay in touch at half-time.
But a second score for Cole early in the second half set Beddau on their way before replacement Blaidd Jenkins crashed over late on. It could have been more if not fort try saving tackles by Marshman and Andrew Packer but Beddau cemented their place among the chasing pack in ASDA League One.
As did Cwmllynfell who ran riot against strugglers Fleur de Lys, running in seven tries including a hat-trick for barnstorming No. 8 Jim Morgan, in their emphatic 50-24 victory. Kevin Jones, Paul Davies, Andrew Luther and Rhodri Davies also went over while full-back Peter Thomas converted five and added a penalty.
Fleur, who had beaten Llanharan the previous week, responded with four tries of their own but are still looking nervously over their shoulder at bottom club Ystrad Rhondda who now have three games in hand and are three points adrift.
No.8 Brendan Lampitt scored twice as Blackwood gained a valuable away win at Waunarlwydd. Greg Davies also scored in the 24-8 that saw them leap-frog their opponents in the table.
