Wales players hit with stomach bug

Six players have been laid low by the stomach bug that threatens to leave Wales running on empty for the second Test. Gareth Jenkins’s preparations have already been disrupted with Chris Czekaj ruled out and defence coach Rowland Phillips another victim.

Six Nations centre Matthew Watkins, flanker Gavin Thomas and prop John Yapp will be assessed on Friday with the Wales management looking into the possible cause.

Jenkins said: “A few of the players have been hit with this sickness and it’s certainly not the best situation before a Test match.

“Matthew has recovered from a back strain but has been suffering from sickness and diarrhoea for the few days. He ran out tentatively yesterday but we feel it’s only right to wait before making the call.”

Wales are looking to overturn their 27-25 defeat to the Pumas last weekend and give Jenkins his first win as head coach. Jenkins said: “We were competitive last week but the challenge this week is to take the next step and produce a winning performance. We feel this team is capable of that.”
