Successful commercialisation is key to the WRU’s future financial status. The Finance Director will play an increasingly important role in identifying and developing commercial opportunities, including property development. The appointee will have strategic input into driving revenue streams, will need to demonstrate the ability to evaluate commercial options and work with the senior management team to deliver appropriate solutions.

The person will need to work closely with the WRU’s professional Regions and member clubs in order to improve their commercial income for the sustainability of the game in Wales and assume responsibility for maximising revenue from ticketing operations.

The finance function currently includes four full time staff, two of whom are qualified accountants. This will be a hands-on role, requiring an individual willing to offer a commitment to delivery. The Finance Director will have the freedom to reshape their team and work with the GCEO to develop a robust and creative financial and commercial strategy for the Group.

The search for this top-flight candidate is being carried out by Cardiff-based head-hunters kmc international and overseen by their finance search specialist, David Binney.

“What we have put together is a very dynamic job description, which calls for a very special person” said Roger Lewis.

“Just as in every area of the business, we are looking for individuals with exceptional capabilities to do their jobs. A Financial Director is essential to the smooth-running of any business and this appointment will be key to delivering our strategic aim of becoming world class, both as a sporting organisation and as a unique events venue.”

“For a heavyweight in the financial world, who has a sensitivity, interest and awareness of rugby, sporting and entertainment matters, I believe this is a dream job – positions like this only come along very rarely.”
