Round Up: ASDA Leagues East

Teifion Lewis was the man of the moment for Treherbert as he bagged a last-gasp try to clinch a narrow 7-8 away win at Pill Harriers. A try from Mark Christopherson, converted by Ross Palmer, had given the hosts a 7-3 half-time lead with outside half Ceri Skym slotting a penalty for the visitors. The second half was uneventful until the last minute when second rower Lewis crossed under the posts to steal the points for Treherbert.

Points machine Matthew Parfitt bagged 13 points as Mountain Ash defeated Ynysybwl 6-23. Flanker Chris Edmunds and centre Carl Hughes both scored tries as the Old Firm secured a useful victory when many other sides didn’t play. Outside half Parfitt was in fine form once again to slot both conversions and a penalty hat-trick to seal the win.

In ASDA League Three East Pontypool Utd scored three tries as they eased to a 30-11 home win against travelling New Tredegar. Prop Martin Jenkins, fullback Aaron Quick and flanker Warren Edwards all crossed for Pontypool while outside half Morgan West was on hand to dispatch three conversions and three penalties.

In the only other game to survive the poor weather Rhymney defeated Brynithel 7-0 in a game that was over at half time. Full back Steve Klein crossed for a try and outside half Steve Lang duly converted to give the hosts a 7-0 lead at the interval. The scoreless second half was played out in horrendous conditions which had forced postponements in many of the league’s other games and saw all games in ASDA League Four cancelled.

ASDA League Five East leaders Abertillery BG began the New Year with a 0-43 whitewash of Ynysddu in their ninth win of the season. Fullback Darren Miles bagged a brace on his way to an impressive twenty-three point haul taking his tally to 205 this term. Miles also kicked a penalty and five conversions as Abertillery ran riot over basement-dwellers Ynysddu. Tries for Abertillery came courtesy of outside half Gareth Edwards, centre pairing Paul Rogers and Lee Boden and second rower Greg Lane.

Steve Harley and Chris O’Brien both scored twice as Gwernyfed saw off visiting Chepstow 37-10. In the league’s only other game Usk edged out Oakdale 24-22 with a last minute push-over try.
