Successful season for U14 regional girls

Successful season for U14 regional girls

The region, comprising of Newport, Caerphilly, Fairwater, Llandaff North and Cynon Valley teams, took on West Wales winning 32-10 and drawing 24-24, and beating North Wales 57-nil and 72-nil. They were also invited to play Gloucestershire U14 at the famous Kingsholme ground in Gloucester and beat their hosts 17-12.

As Welsh regional champions, East Wales were invited to the National Regional Youth competition at Rugby School in Rugby on May Bank Holiday weekend. The team were short on numbers due to holidays and injuries so local teams were scouted to recruit new players to take to the 12-a-side tournament.

East Wales won their first game, against Yorkshire, 25-10 with tries scored by Alexia Evans (2), Georgia Teuma, Joanne Jones, and Cerys Ballett. The other match in the group saw them up against South West (North). Unfortunately, in this game East Wales lost two players due to injury, Captain Jo Jones with a broken collar bone and Alexia Evans who twisted her knee, and the match was lost 19-nil.

The Welsh girls came second in their group and qualified for the plate competition, their semi-final opponents were the North West. Once again the team showed great strength and won 19-5 with tries from Alexia Evans (2) and Georgia Teuma.

Into the final they went, taking on the East. It was a hard fought game with East Wales coming out on top 5-nil with the only try of the match scored by Alexia Evans, who scored in every match.

This was their first visit to an England competition and to come away with the plate shows how well the Welsh game is developing at grass roots level.

The coaches are proud of each and every one of the players who represented the East Wales region during the season. Well done girls for your success and for your effort and commitment.
