Preview: Konica Minolta Cup

Wales legend Graham Price hopes history will repeat itself when Pontypool face Cardiff in the third round of the Konica Minolta Cup.

British Lions prop Price was part of the Pooler side that lifted the cup in 1983 after beating Cardiff en-route to an Arms Park final against Swansea.

And though the matches of today may not involve the same calibre of players or command the same sell-out crowds, Price hopes the outcome is the same.

He said: “Our pack was full of internationals but we never used to be able to beat Cardiff. They were always our bogey side.

“I remember the game in 1978 when we absolutely destroyed their forward pack but Gerald Davies, the Cardiff wing, touched the ball four times and scored four tries.

“But my best memory of the cup came in 1983. We managed to beat all our bogey sides, including Cardiff ,and went on to lift the cup. Perhaps we can do the same this weekend.”

Llanelli, thirteen-times winners of the cup, entertain Llangennech in a derby encounter at Stradey. The Division One West side lies third in the table and ran Ebbw Vale close in the at the same stage last season before slipping 28-17.

Swansea entertain Tredegar Ironsides who dispatched Cambrian Welfare and St Albans in the earlier rounds and they should be far too strong for the Four East outfit.

Glamorgan Wanderers reached the last sixteen in 2006/2007 where they were edged out 20-19 by Bedwas. Rumney of One East will make the short trip up to the Memorial Ground hoping to improve on last year when they made an exit in round one after losing 29-15 at Penallta.

Loughor of Two West travel to Pandy Park to meet Cross Keys having won four out of five league games on the road. The Premier side will have to be at their best to go through as will Bedwas who entertain Nantyffyllon of Three South West. Bedwas were quarter-finalists last season but Nantyffyllon reached round five before losing at Llandovery.

There will be minnows in the last 32 this season as Aberavon Quins of Three South West entertain Gwernyfed, the unbeaten leaders of Four East, Glynneath, the Four South West side meet Bedlinog of  Three South East, while Tondu of Three South West will play against Blaenavon of Five East.
