Round Up: WRU National Leagues East

An assured kicking display from outside-half Steve Laing gave Abergavenny the perfect Christmas present as they overcame leaders Garndiffaith 21-12 to take their place at the top of League Three East.

Home full-back Grant Harty had his try cancelled out by Garndiffaith winger Geraint Jones in the first half but Laing gave his side an 11-6 half-time advantage with two penalties. A further try from Will Johnson, converted by Laing, stretched the home side’s lead in the second half but, when the resilient visitors again hit back through a Chris Baldwin try, it was left to Laing to gift wrap the points for his side with a final penalty.

In the league’s other matches outside-half Morgan West scored a try and three conversions as Pontypool United out muscled Nelson 21-0, Kyle Scrivens grabbed a brace in Cwmbran’s 30-0 triumph over Pontllanfraith and Lloyd Davies’s try was scant consolation for Senghenydd who were hammered 53-12 by Croesyceiliog.

Gwernyfed made sure Nantyglo’s stint at the top of League Four East was a short one as they beat their visitors 16-5 to take their place at the top. Nantyglo took an early lead through a Steve Coles try but his effort provided the visitors only points while a determined Gwernyfed defied the tricky conditions to record two tries, through Steve Harley and Andrew Hill, and two penalties from the boot of Danny Skyrme.

Elsewhere, Tom Baker and Gareth Morgan each scored two tries in Monmouth’s 32-23 victory over Machen while Llandaff pipped Risca 23-19.
