Ospreys boss hopes for win in Bourgoin

Ospreys Coach Lyn Jones is banking on a win in Bourgoin on Sunday being good enough to finally send his side through to the last eight of the Heineken Cup.

Now in their fifth season, the Ospreys are hoping to follow the lead taken by the Scarlets last season by becoming only the second Welsh Region to reach the Heineken Cup quarter-finals.

The revenge victory over Gloucester, the only team to beat them in Pool 2 this season, has given Jones’s side the chance to make up for the agony of missing out on the quarter-finals last season by one try.

“That win was as satisfying as any other we have achieved in this tournament. We had a big double over Sale Sharks last season, but then we had the big disappointment of failing to qualify for the quarter-finals,” said Ospreys Coach Jones.

“We were the better side for 60 minutes at Kingsholm in the first Pool match against Gloucester and we were on top for 70 minutes at the Liberty. We dominated them right throughout the game: physically, at the set-piece and in kicking.

“I think this defeat might do them some good in the long run. This might be just the kick up the backside they need to progress. The good thing now is that we have played ourselves into a position where we need to go to France and win to get through to the last eight. Next weekend in Bourgoin is our opportunity.

“We have been a team full of potential for quite some time, but we’ve often been our own worst enemy by being too positive. I told the players before they went out that the only team that could beat them was themselves.

“We played with the top two inches and did what was required to win. Now we have to go to Bourgoin and back up this result.

“It sounds easy, but I’ve always said that to progress in the Heineken Cup you have to have the ability to win in France.”
